| Description |
This book was compiled for school education and this artifact is an old Korean verse textbook for elementary education. Korean education has a very long history. Ever since the Three Kingdoms Period, there was an education system that focused on fostering talented individuals. Taehak and Gyeongdang existed in Goguryeo, Baekjae had the Ogyeongbaksa and Mosi, while Shilla had national studies and painting. In 930 (13th year of Taejo), Goguryeo set up an elementary level school led by an instructor, while an academy was set at Gaegyeong where six groups of cadets were trained to become administrative agents. In 992 (11th year of Seongjong), Seongjong systematically modified school education and in December of the same year, he set up the Gugjagam (present day Sungkyunkwan University). In addition, during the Goguryeo Dynasty, local Confucian schools, classes at Gyeongjung and the 12-do private school fostered education. During the Chosun Dynasty, the school systems of late Goryeo were adopted, which had the Sungkyunkwan School in the center, while local Confucian schools taught students. There were also private education in auditoriums and academies. |
