peonies have an elegant appearance and symbolizes prosperity. Peony paintings were usually used in folding screens for bridal rooms and decorating woman¡¯s quarters, and were also used for religious ceremonies and in the royal court. Besides for wedding ceremonies, folding screens with paintings of peony were also used to decorate the bridal room of newly weds and on other joyful occasions such as the 60th birthday of somebody. It is also connected to shamanist practices and is used by female shamans to decorate their shrines and is also used in rituals such as exorcism. There are many stories related to it because the magnificent peony represents wealth and fame. |
